Gearheart is FPS State Runner Up

Floyd County Superintendent Anna Shepherd congratulates Colin Gearheart, 6th grade student at Duff-Allen Central Elementary, on his outstanding performance in the Individual Future Problem Solving (FPS) for the state of Kentucky. This competition is part of the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition (KAAC) State Governor’s Cup.

Superintendent Shepherd comments, “Congratulations Colin! Colin Gearheart is the State Runner Up in the junior level of Individual Future Problem Solving! He has the opportunity to compete in the International Future Problem Solving competition at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in June!” Continuing, Shepherd says, “We also want to congratulate his coach Erin Asbury on the fantastic job she’s done with the academic team at Duff-Allen Central Elementary this year! The Quick Recall team, the FPS team and individual students in different content areas advanced to state level competition this year!”

Shepherd says, “In FPS, students are presented with a topic. Then they follow a 6 step process beginning with identifying challenges surrounding that topic. From there, students choose one underlying problem and come up with different solutions to that problem. Next, students develop the guidelines used to evaluate the solutions, evaluate and rank them. Lastly, students create and develop an action plan for the solution ranked highest.” Shepherd says, “FPS requires creativity, critical thinking, analysis, decision making and more. It is truly one of the most challenging academic competitions. Colin’s topic for Internationals is “Antibiotic Resistance.”

Shepherd concludes saying, “Good luck Colin from our entire Floyd County Schools family,”
