Superintendent Anna Shepherd congratulates Kylie Walters on placing 7th and our other Floyd County middle and high school students on their performance at the Kentucky State Governor’s Cup competition for academics.
Shepherd commented, “Congratulations Kylie Walters from Duff-Allen Central Middle! Kylie came in 7th in the Composition segment of the Governor’s Cup in Louisville. We are so proud of Kylie and want to see her continue her journey in academic competitions throughout her school career.”
Shepherd says that two other students competed in Composition at the middle and high school levels. “Congratulations Sierra Slone from Allen Elementary! Sierra came in 15th in the state! Congratulations Kaitlyn Hager from Prestonsburg High School! Kaitlyn was 19th in Kentucky!” Shepherd continued saying, “Congratulations Ally Hamilton from Adams Middle! Ally came in 26th in Science! These students performed at such high levels and we are very proud of them!”
Two of our students, Braxton Howard in Arts & Humanities and Taryn Meade in Language Arts, both from DACE, scored in the top 50 in the state.
Shepherd says that this is the first time since 2019 that the state Governor’s Cup has been an in-person event. She believes that having virtual only options for the previous 2 years may be a factor in a decline in the number of students competing in academics in Floyd County. She concluded by saying, “I hope our parents, guardians and families will encourage their children to explore competing in academics and joining our academic teams. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to enrich their content knowledge, to develop and fine tune their study schools, and to be part of an incredible community.”
